About Susie Joy & My Food on Wheels
Â
Hello foodie friends — I’m Susie Joy, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way here!
I grew up in a close-knit suburb just outside of Boston, surrounded by a loving family. My parents, childhood sweethearts since the fifth grade, were the heart of our home. I had an older brother, and my grandmother also lived with us, filling our home with warmth and wisdom.
Life brought its challenges — during my high school years, I faced heartbreaking losses, saying goodbye to my grandmother, brother, and father within just three years. It was a difficult time, but those experiences shaped who I am today and deepened the value I place on family, resilience, and community.
After graduating from college in Vermont with a degree in education, I settled into a teaching job in a small town I came to love. My mother eventually moved in with us, and we leaned on each other for strength and support through life’s ups and downs.
One summer, everything changed when we visited a rural fair. As we wandered past the games and food booths, I turned to my husband and said four words that would forever change the course of our lives: “We could do that.”
And we did.
The very next summer, we launched our first food booth at that same fair. It was nothing glamorous — old, dusty, and a little rough around the edges — but it was ours. That moment marked the beginning of our journey into the carnival concession business, and we were hooked.
We spent the next few years building our food trailer business. While I continued teaching during the school year, we hit the road during the fair season, serving up classic carnival favorites at 18 fairs and festivals each year. It was hard work, but I loved every second of it — the travel, the people, the joy of serving great food.
Eventually, we introduced what would become our signature item: the Blooming Onion. We were proud to be the first to bring it to the New England fair circuit — and it was a hit! Not only was it popular, but it also proved that with the right product and a lot of heart, this business could be both fulfilling and financially rewarding.
That’s why I started My Food on Wheels — to share everything I’ve learned from this incredible journey. Whether you're dreaming of starting your own food trailer or already on the road and looking to grow, this is a place for guidance, inspiration, and community.
I’d love to hear from you — where you're from, what you're selling (or thinking of selling), and any questions or roadblocks you're facing. Let’s learn from each other and grow together!
You can follow us on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram under My Food on Wheels. And don’t forget to share this page with others who might need a little inspiration to get rolling.
